Frequently Asked Questions

Registration

What do I need to bring to the registration appointment

You will need transcripts from your most recent secondary school, proof of identity, Proof Of Ontario Residency (ex. a current utility bill in your name) and proof of legal status in Canada to register at Gary Allan.

Can I register for a course at Gary Allan if I am already a student in another HDSB secondary school?

If you are a current student of a Halton District School Board secondary school, please see your guidance office for registration options.

Can I register for a course at Gary Allan if I am already a student in another school board?

It depends.  Unfortunately you cannot be registered at Gary Allan in an Online credit course  if you are a student of another public or catholic school board in Ontario.  You may register in a summer school, night school, or non-credit course such as International and Indigenous Languages Program (elementary) if you are a student of another board.

How do I know what courses are offered?

Gary Allan offers a wide range of courses in Math, English, Social Science, Science and Business, honouring workplace, college, and university pathways.  As some courses fill up quickly, please contact your local Gary Allan campus to enquire about a specific course.

Course Delivery

Do you offer everything online?

Some courses are offered fully online, others are offered in a Hybrid model (some online, some in class) and others are offered as in class.  Call your local campus for more details about specific courses.

Can I work on my course over the summer and into next year?

While credits not completed in June can often be recovered in September, Gary Allan does not offer a 12 month program of study for day school students.  However, summer school credits (one month) are offered through Gary Allan for interested students.

What is the time commitment?

All courses offered by Gary Allan are 110 hour Ministry of Education credits.    Fully online students are expected to log 6.5 hours per week, per credit, in the online course.  Students are encouraged to access subject teachers at any Gary Allan campus for additional course support.

Are you open evenings and weekends?

Gary Allan courses are run as a day school program.  Our day instructional school hours are 9:00am to 3:35pm.  Gary Allan does offer secondary night school credits during the school year.

Co-operative Education (Co-op)

Do you offer paid co-op?

We have the ability to connect a paid employment experience with coop, depending on the employment.  Please call your local campus for more details.

Can I get co-op credits for work I have done before registering?

No.  Coop is a specific course of study that requires consent from the employer via a work-education agreement.  Only hours worked while registered as a coop student in the current academic year can be used for coop credit.

If I hand in my paycheques, do I get co-op credits?

Proof of hours is only one part of earning a coop credit.  Other assignments, including (but not limited to) log sheets, reflections, safety testing and other summative assessments must be successfully completed in order to earn coop credits.

How can I find out what I need to graduate?

Please contact your local Gary Allan campus to arrange an appointment with one of our counsellors to explore your options.
